THE UNRECOGNISED TOLL

The first tenet of medicine is, “First, do no harm”. With the Corona virus pandemic, there has been little thought of the consequences of the measures taken to fight the virus, which are summed up by Professor Shuki Shemer, Chairman of the Board of Assuta Medical Centre, Israel, who writes, “Patients with sicknesses other than COVID-19 (cancer, heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, etc.) are unfortunately being neglected during this difficult period…What price will they have to pay by not receiving diagnoses in time due to the epidemic? Delayed diagnosis and neglect of these critical patients will come back to haunt us in the future.” The benefits of any action taken, including its duration, has to be balanced against the harm that it may cause, especially as the pandemic wanes.
